Don’t miss a single detail.
Use this comprehensive checklist to ensure your Toronto home renovation is finished to a professional standard.
Interior finishing is where renovations either shine or disappoint. It’s the last thing done and the first thing noticed. After hundreds of projects across Toronto and the GTA, our team has compiled the ultimate checklist organized by phase so nothing gets missed.
Whether you’re managing your own renovation or coordinating with a contractor, use this checklist as your verification tool at every stage.
Phase 01
Planning & Preparation
Before a single nail is driven, the planning phase sets the foundation for a successful interior finishing project in Toronto. Skipping steps here creates costly problems during construction.
-
Confirm project scope in writing — room by room, item by item
Note: Include trim types, materials, paint colours, hardware selections -
Check condo board rules if applicable (noise hours, elevator bookings, insurance)
-
Pull any required permits — typically needed for electrical and structural work
-
Select wood species and finish type for all trim, cabinetry, and shelving
Note: Painted MDF vs. stain-grade solid wood vs. paint-grade finger joint -
Order materials early — custom trim profiles and specialty hardware have 2–4 week lead times
-
Verify all walls are at 90° and ceilings are level — document any deviations
-
Finalize lighting plan — ceiling fixtures and sconces affect crown moulding placement
-
Create a room-by-room phasing plan to keep living areas usable
Phase 02
Rough-In & Substrate
The rough-in phase handles everything behind the walls before the finishing surfaces go on. Proper backing installation at this stage is critical for wall paneling, wainscoting, and any mounted cabinetry.
-
Install backing blocks between studs at wainscoting cap rail height
Note: This is what your cap rail nails into — no backing means gaps and movement -
Add backing for all planned shelf brackets, wall-mounted cabinets, and TV walls
-
Run any electrical for under-cabinet lighting, in-cabinet outlets, or feature lighting
-
Complete all drywall patching and mud — everything must be dry before trim
-
Sand all drywall joints flush — trim magnifies any bump behind it
-
Prime all drywall surfaces before trim installation (reduces paint coats later)
-
Address any floor leveling needed before baseboard installation
Note: Uneven floors create gaps at the base — scribing baseboards costs more than leveling -
Confirm all heating/cooling vents are in final position before flooring goes down
Phase 03
Carpentry & Finishing Surfaces
This is the heart of your interior finishing Toronto project. Crown moulding, wall paneling, wainscoting, custom shelving, and all trim elements are installed in this phase. Quality here determines the final result.
-
Install baseboards — cope all inside corners, mitre outside corners
Note: Nail into studs, not just into drywall -
Install door casings — check all doors swing freely before casing
-
Install window trim — test all windows open and close first
-
Install crown moulding — use a story pole to mark consistent height all around
Note: Crown moulding installation in Toronto requires plumb and level reference checks -
Install wainscoting or wall paneling — confirm horizontal level at each section
-
Install chair rail at consistent height (33–36″ from finished floor)
-
Install all built-in cabinetry and shelving — shim for level and plumb
-
Fill all nail holes, sand smooth, caulk all joints and transitions
Note: This single step separates professional from amateur finish work
Phase 04
Final Details & Sign-Off
The final phase catches everything that was temporarily removed or skipped during construction. These details are what clients see first — and what photos show. Do not rush through this phase.
-
Prime all raw wood trim surfaces — two coats for MDF
-
Apply two finish coats of paint — semi-gloss on trim, satin or eggshell on walls
-
Re-install all door hardware — hinges, handles, door stops, locksets
-
Install all cabinet hardware — knobs, pulls, hinges, soft-close mechanisms
-
Install closet organizer components — rods, shelves, hooks, baskets
-
Touch-up paint at all nail hole fills, caulk lines, and trim edges
-
Clean all glass surfaces — any spatter from trim painting on windows must be removed
-
Final walkthrough with client — document any punch-list items
Note: Every item on the punch list must be addressed before final invoice
A Note on Sequence
Interior finishing must follow the correct sequence: rough framing and drywall before trim, trim before flooring in most cases, paint on walls before trim is installed (for easier cut-in later). Reversing any of these steps creates rework which is the most common source of budget overruns in Toronto renovations.
